 Nationwide Cashless Medical Aid Rolled Out for Road Accident Victims

In a major move to enhance emergency medical response for road accident victims, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has officially launched the ‘Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme, 2025’. Effective from May 5, this nationwide scheme ensures that accident victims receive free treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh for the first seven days post-accident at approved healthcare facilities.

The initiative seeks to curb fatalities caused by delays in medical attention after road mishaps. Under the scheme:

Any individual injured in a road accident involving a motor vehicle will be eligible for immediate, cashless medical care.

Treatment will be available at designated hospitals, while non-designated hospitals may provide initial stabilisation care as per guidelines.

The National Health Authority (NHA) will serve as the central implementing body, working in tandem with local police, state health agencies, and hospitals.

Each State Road Safety Council will act as the nodal authority to facilitate implementation at the state/UT level.

A Steering Committee, led by the Road Secretary and including NHA’s CEO and senior MoRTH officials, will oversee the execution and effectiveness of the programme.

This follows the success of a pilot launched in Chandigarh in March 2024, later expanded to six other states.

Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted the urgency of such measures, citing 4.80 lakh road accidents and 1.72 lakh deaths in 2023 alone.
