New Delhi, May 5 (ANI): In the wake of the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists, Congress leader Udit Raj has reignited debate over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier vows of firm retaliation against cross-border terrorism.

Speaking to ANI, Raj referenced Modi’s past remarks, stating, “The Prime Minister had once promised to cross into Lahore and bring back ten heads in response to one. The time has come for him to honour that promise.”

He also called out Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, questioning what barriers remain in the way of a robust response to Pakistan. “Who is stopping you?” Raj asked, adding, “You have the full backing of the Congress and the entire opposition for any strong action against those behind the attack.”

The comments come amid growing national anger and calls for justice following the April 22 attack, which security officials have linked to cross-border terror networks. The Centre, responding to the outrage, has pledged a strong and targeted response, assuring that both the perpetrators and their masterminds will face the consequences.

A high-level Cabinet Committee on Security meeting revealed that the attack may have been intended to disrupt the peace and democratic progress in Jammu and Kashmir, especially following the smooth conduct of elections and visible economic development in the region.

In a bold move, the government has also signaled diplomatic pressure by putting the Indus Water Treaty on hold—a strong message intended for Pakistan amid rising tensions.

The Centre has granted the armed forces complete operational autonomy to determine the timing, nature, and scale of any retaliatory strike, while reiterating its commitment to eradicating terrorism from the region.
