Srinagar, May 5 — Deep anguish and outrage have been expressed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the head of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) Jammu & Kashmir, and members of the organization over the horrifying incident in the Nishat area of Srinagar, where a tribal woman was reportedly subjected to sexual violence and later succumbed to her injuries.
In a powerful joint statement, the MMU denounced the act as not just a brutal crime against an individual, but a glaring symbol of the deepening moral and ethical decay within society.
“This tragic incident is a chilling reminder of how far we have strayed from our spiritual and moral moorings,” the statement read. “It is a reflection of the increasing influence of obscenity, unchecked digital content, drug and alcohol abuse, and a culture of corruption and greed that continues to erode the values we once held sacred.”
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq emphasized that the teachings of Islam lay profound emphasis on the sanctity of life, the dignity of women, and the responsibility of every individual to uphold justice. “As people of faith, we must not remain silent spectators to such barbarity. This is a moment for deep societal reflection and collective repentance. We must return to the principles of Deen, revive our ethical consciousness, and rebuild the moral compass that has guided our civilization for centuries.”
Offering heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the MMU prayed for the maghfirah (forgiveness) of the deceased and her elevation in the ranks of Jannat-ul-Firdous.
The statement also issued a strong appeal to the administration and law enforcement agencies to pursue the case with utmost seriousness and ensure that the perpetrators face the harshest possible punishment under the law. “Swift and exemplary justice is not only necessary for the victim and her family but also crucial to restoring faith in the system and deterring future crimes.”
The MMU reiterated its call for social reform, urging religious scholars, educators, community leaders, and parents to come together in combating the root causes of such incidents. “The silence of society is no longer an option. The time has come for action—rooted in faith, guided by ethics, and driven by compassion.”
