 Tensions Flare Again Along LoC: Pak Troops Open Unprovoked Fire in Multiple J&K Sectors, Indian Army Retaliates

Srinagar, May 6, 2025 — In a concerning escalation along the Line of Control (LoC), the Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked small-arms fire across multiple forward sectors in Jammu and Kashmir during the intervening night of May 5 and 6. This marks the 12th consecutive night of ceasefire violations, raising tensions in the volatile border region.

According to defense sources, the Pakistani firing targeted strategic areas in Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor. These sectors have historically witnessed repeated ceasefire breaches, but the persistence of nightly violations has sparked heightened alert across the Indian side.

“Pakistan Army opened unprovoked fire from forward posts along the LoC. Our troops exercised full restraint initially but responded firmly and proportionately to ensure safety of our positions and civilians nearby,” an Indian Army spokesperson confirmed.

Fortunately, no casualties or significant infrastructure damage have been reported on the Indian side. However, sources indicate that security installations and villages in proximity to the LoC have been placed on high alert, with additional forces mobilized as a precautionary measure.

The latest flare-up follows the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives — most of them tourists. Indian intelligence agencies suspect the involvement of Pakistan-based terror outfits, further worsening bilateral relations.

In response to the terror incident and subsequent LoC violations, India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty negotiations and temporarily closed its airspace to Pakistani aircraft until May 23. A hotline conversation between the military leaderships of both countries on April 29 had aimed to de-escalate border tensions, but the continued violations suggest a breakdown in communication or disregard for mutual assurances.

With the situation deteriorating, the Indian Army is maintaining a state of high operational readiness. Meanwhile, international observers including the United Nations have expressed concern, urging both nations to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation.
