Fisherman Goes Missing After Dal Lake Tragedy Near Duck Park

Srinagar, May 2: A sudden turn in weather turned tragic on Friday afternoon when a boat carrying two fishermen capsized in Dal Lake near the popular Duck Park, setting off an intense rescue mission that was later paused due to darkness and poor visibility.

According to eyewitnesses and officials, powerful gusts swept across the lake without warning, toppling the small vessel and throwing both fishermen into the chilly waters.

One of them, Abdul Majeed Khosa—resident of Rainawari—managed to stay afloat and was swiftly rescued by nearby teams. But the second fisherman, 24-year-old Taufeeq Ahmad Chopan of Chopan Mohalla, Rainawari, vanished beneath the surface, sparking urgent and exhaustive search efforts.

Rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), aided by divers and specialised boats, combed the area throughout the evening, using every tool at their disposal. Yet, by nightfall, no sign of Taufeeq had emerged.

“We threw in everything we had—equipment, expertise, and hours—but the fading light forced us to halt for the day,” said an SDRF official.

The search is expected to resume with first light on Saturday.
